The Polish bastards at Selfmadgod Records serve up a true behemoth by way of the split release from Crypticus/Scaremaker, which will descend upon earthly thrones 1/17/12. Being long time fans of both bands when I heard they were doing a split I knew it was going to be a true goregrind masterpiece, I was right. The album features 9 tracks of horror/gore obsessed bludgeoning, ripping old school death, and either band’s signature occult lyricism.
Crypticus leads the way with the first 4 tracks from the album, and although I am heavily Crypticus biased, Scaremaker matches them note for note, track for track, making the album truly explosive. Crypticus starts with the track Beauty & Deceased, harping to their old school death tales of deadly scarecrows, black magic, and the undying HP Lovecraft. Venturing further into the madness that defines the album, one carries on towards furthering tracks that all run in brilliant syncopation delivering a face smashing ride throughout 4 blisteringly visceral tracks.
The fifth track on the album From The Coffin sees the beginning of Scaremaker’s side of the album, ending with the final 5 thrashing death hymns that find their roots with such horror classics as Madman, Burnt Offerings, And Trick or Treat. The progression of Scaremaker’s slow, haunting melody begs the listener to be drawn with the prisons of their own minds and witness the horror only the imagination can bring. Killer, killer, killer, from start to finish both bands offer up some of the best death I’ve heard in a long time.
Bottom line, the album fucking slays on levels my tiny mind cannot even begin to comprehend. From the sludging death that Crypticus leads with to the haunting thrash that Scaremaker finishes up with the album is worth the listening to, and fucking then some. I will add however that Scaremaker has a track towards the end titled Demon Slave, I won’t spoil it for you but you’ll see why it’s my favorite when you pick it up later this month.
